Buyers Agency

How Real Estate Agents Get Paid (And Why a Buyer’s Agent is Important)

When you buy a home, there are usually two real estate agents involved: the seller’s agent and the buyer’s agent. The seller’s agent works for the seller, helping them market and sell the home. The buyer’s agent works for you, helping you find the right home, negotiate the best deal, and guide you through the process.

For many years, it was common for the seller to pay both agents’ commissions from the sale price of the home. That means the seller would set a price high enough to cover their agent’s fee and your agent.

But now, after the recent lawsuit against the National Association of Realtors (NAR), things are changing: Sellers longer feel required to pay the buyer’s agent commission. This means you, as the buyer, may need to negotiate directly with your agent about their fee—or ask the seller to contribute to it as part of the deal.

So why do you still need a buyer’s agent?

A buyer’s agent is your advocate in the process. They:

✅ Help you find the right home that fits your budget and needs

✅ Guide you through inspections, appraisals, and paperwork

✅ Negotiate on your behalf to get the best price and terms

✅ Help avoid costly mistakes and delays

✅ Explain the process and make sure you understand each step

In short, a buyer’s agent makes the home-buying process smoother, less stressful, and often saves you money—even if you’re responsible for paying their fee directly.
